From Fashion To Film, Everything Old Is Hip Again

DALLAS, – If you swore you’d never wear hip-huggers, paisley or a hairdo with “wings” again, you may be in trouble. The 60s and 70s are back, baby — and in a big way. Everything from clothing styles to entertainment is going retro.

This fall, movies continue to fuel this blast from the past. One example
is the film version of the 70s TV hit “Charlie’s Angels,” hitting theaters
soon, and the 21st Century update of a 60s TV classic “Mission: Impossible 2”
coming out on video, to mention a few.

“This trend was building throughout the 90s and we’re seeing the
culmination this year,” said Lori Flynn, director of rental video for
Blockbuster. “The ‘Austin Powers’ films, which were set in the 60s, added to
the resurgence and now everything from movies to TV commercials to fashion has
a retro feel.”

Many recent films are based on popular TV shows from the 60s and 70s
including “Wild Wild West (1999),” “The Mod Squad (1999),” “Lost in Space
(1998),” “The Avengers (1998),” “The Saint (1997),” “Mission: Impossible
(1997),” “The Brady Bunch Movie (1995)” and “The Fugitive (1993).” In
addition, “Mission: Impossible 2” will be available for rent on DVD and VHS at
Blockbuster beginning Nov. 7, and participating Blockbuster stores will also
be carrying a limited-edition $20 BLOCKBUSTER GiftCard featuring “Mission
Impossible 2” artwork.

Not only are remakes popular, but several other recent hit movies have
been set in the 60s and 70s. No list would be complete without “Austin
Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who
Shagged Me (1999),” but other films like “Remember the Titans (2000),” “The
Hurricane (1999),” “Summer of Sam (1999),” “Man on the Moon (1999),” “Boogie
Nights (1997)” and “Apollo 13 (1995)” are also set in this period.

This revival of movies taking cues from the past may soon be coming to
end, however.

“There are a couple of remakes every year, but I think we may see this
recent surge in movies with a 60s or 70s influence winding down,” said Flynn.

But if you just can’t let go of the past, don’t worry … Blockbuster has
movies to take you back to that bygone era (without having to don a pair of
flares).
