Father and son perish in canoe mishap off South San Francisco

The bodies of Luis Ruvalcaba, 22, of Daly City and his father, Guillermo Ruvalcaba-Sandoval, were recovered by U.S. Coast Guard rescue personnel, according to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

Ruvalcaba’s girlfriend, who was not identified but was a passenger on the 12-foot orange canoe, was rescued by helicopter around 2 a.m. Tuesday after she was able to call out to rescuers, the newspaper said.

She was taken to Seton Medical Center in Daly City.

Ruvalcaba’s body was found around 9 a.m. Tuesday when the search resumed at daylight, after having been called off the previous night.

The canoe had set off Monday afternoon from Oyster Point Marina but the party failed to return to shore by nightfall, prompting the search, the newspaper said.

Ruvalcaba-Sandoval was unconscious when he was spotted by searchers just after 2 a.m. Tuesday and was taken to Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in Burlingame, where he was pronounced dead, the newspaper said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the individuals involved in last night’s tragedy,” Coast Guard Capt. Greg Stump said in a written statement.

“The outpouring of assistance from both the local response agencies and the public, who searched the shoreline at first light, is a testament to the spirit of the local community members and public agencies,” he said.

The Coast Guard was joined in the search and rescue operation by the marine unit of the South San Francisco Fire Dept., the newspaper said.
