“The series of books that I’m working on is part of Garn Press, which is a little boutique press that is right out of New York City. These series is the Women’s Scholars Series,” she said. “The idea is to invigorate the work of women’s scholars, who are scholars in the field, who have made an impact on how we educate children in today’s educational climate.”
On her latest book, Professor Kabuto said, “I really wanted to address what is happening in today’s political climate, and looking at how we are treating children in terms of testing and assessment. There is no better book for that than ‘Teaching without Testing.’ It was put out in the 90’s but it is actually more relevant today. It looks at the shift in Common Core State Standards and the movement of that to the federal level, and away from state and local school districts to try and find innovative ways to test populations who they know about. ‘Teaching without Testing’ addresses and re-addresses those issues very well. I looked with Denny Taylor, who was the original author of ‘Teaching without Testing,’ and she republished it in a book called ‘Child’s Point of View.’ We need to look at today’s political climate and it is even more critical now with the new presidential administration.”
Dr. Kabuto is an Associate Professor of Literacy Education in the Elementary and Early Childhood Education (EECE) Department at Queens College, City University of New York; moreover, she is the director of the B-6 Literacy Program, and the Senior Editor for the Garn Press Women Scholars Series. “It was really important for me as a woman scholar to focus about Women’s Scholars. An article about women who publish scholarly work in education, showed that the percentage is very low compared to male scholars. The question is why are female scholars publishing far less than male scholars, when the majority of elementary education teaching population is female. It was important for me to go back and look at how women scholars have made an impact in elementary education,” she said.
