The man behind the Dr. Alex Khadavi Dermatology & Laser Medical Centre, located in Encino, is one of the top practitioners in his chosen field, known for his groundbreaking research into skincare and haircare, as well as for his already-acquired knowledge and extensive experience.
“Within my dermatology research, I’ve been working on isolation stem cell therapy and amplification for anti-aging of the face and the entire body,” he reveals, “though current stem cell therapy isn’t concentrated enough to produce dramatic results. Within the next 10 years, I believe we’ll be seeing rapid and remarkable rejuvenation effects of intravenous isolated stem cell therapy.”
“With my company, Advanced Skin and Hair, I’m always looking to improve solutions for men and women suffering from hair loss,” continues the doctor, moving on to another area of his expertise. “We know that treating a condition is only part of the solution – the other part is level of comfort. With hair loss, the progress is slow.
“It takes a year to reverse the hair’s appearance to that of three to five years before. We all want immediate results and for someone with advanced hair loss, the options for topical masking solutions have been unrealistic-looking. I’ve been developing a scalp coverage fibre that will look just like your hair and I’m excited to share that we’ve finalised a formula and will have this available for retail in July of 2016.”
As someone with very fine hair, thinning a little on top, I was determined to take advantage of the good doctor’s know-how concerning the issue while I had him on the line, so to speak.
“We’ve recently learned that Prostaglandin D is another contributing factor to hair loss,” he explains. “Prostaglandin D thins the hair diameter and overall causes the miniaturisation process. If we can prevent or slow Prostaglandin D from affecting the hair follicle, you can regrow the hair.
“We’ve known that DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is the cause of hair loss and now we’ve learned that Prostaglandin D is another step after DHT, which causes the hair to become miniaturised. Research to block Prostaglandin D is underway.”
Can baldness ever be reversed? “Thinning hair can only be reversed up to five years before,” replies Dr. Khadavi. “Once a hair follicle has died and the skin is smooth, a hair cannot grow. The hair needs an active follicle to grow, which is why hair transplantation is the only way for men with areas of balding to regain a fuller head of hair.”
“I realised doctors focused primarily on anti-aging were not offering the best treatments and the best advice. I felt there was more to be addressed and that proper anti-aging skin care at an early age is linked to skin cancer prevention.”
While we were on the subject of skin cancer prevention, I asked Dr. Khadavi to fill me in on some of the newer methods for treating it. “Oncolytic Virus Therapy is a very new form of treatment for skin cancer and other forms of cancer…
“An oncolytic virus is a virus that specially infects and kills cancer cells. As the infected cancer cells are destroyed by lysis, they release new infectious virus particles to help destroy the remaining tumour. These viruses are basically programmed to kill cancer cells.
“T-Vec, by Amgen, is set to become the first approved oncolytic agent in the western world. In October 2015, the US FDA approved T-Vec (brand name IMLYGIC) for the treatment of melanoma in patients with inoperable tumours.”
Although he can’t give too much away due to patient/doctor confidentiality, Dr. Alex is able to reveal a little about some of his more well-known clients. “I can say that Tori Spelling is a huge fan of my anti-aging product line, RejuveMD, which uses growth factor to signal the skin to act and look younger – as well as my Clearogen acne solutions.
“She’s featured me and my treatments on her shows and has referred a number of patients to me. Another memorable client is model and actress Chantel Jeffries. She is a huge fan of our Clearogen Three Step Acne Treatment Set.”
Dr. Khadavi’s years of hard work have paid off and today his treatment centre and scientifically-tested range of products are potent weapons in the ongoing fight against the aging process. Might he one day consider opening more clinics in other parts of the world?
“I don’t see myself opening clinics all over the world, as I’m more interested in research and education,” he admits. “I’m an Associate Professor of Dermatology at USC and I truly value the opportunity to educate and engage with our future leaders in dermatology. I’m a researcher at heart and am always involved in research for hair, skin and full body rejuvenation.”
