ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland and Labrador – Jazz sensation Diana Krall and rock group Nickelback came out as the big winners at “The 2002 JUNO Awards” telecast, which was broadcast live Sunday from Mile One Stadium in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The show, hosted by the Barenaked Ladies, took place on three different stages and featured high octane performances by Nelly Furtado with Swollen Members, Diana Krall, Sum 41, Alanis Morissette, Shaggy, Amanda Marshall, and Nickelback.
Krall, who performed a smoky rendition of “Cry Me A River”, won both Best Artist and Best Album (The Look of Love) for her second and third JUNO Award. She picked up her first for Best Vocal Jazz Album (The Look of Love) a day before at the non-televised Premier’s Gala.
Vancouver rock band Nickelback were also two-time winners, earning Best Group and Best Single (“How You Remind Me”) accolades for their second and third JUNO Award overall. They won Best Rock Album (Silver Side Up) yesterday, the same night as band producer Randy Staub won Best Recording Engineer for his work on Nickelback singles “How You Remind Me” and “Too Bad”.
Other winners included: Shaggy for Best Selling Album, foreign or domestic (Hotshot); Default for Best New Group; David Usher for Best Pop Album (Morning Orbit); Swollen Members for Best Rap Recording (Bad Dreams) and Glenn Lewis for Best R&B/Soul Recording (Don’t You Forget It).
The show kicked-off with a rousing musical tribute to Newfoundland and Labrador led by hometown band Great Big Sea and a contingent of 20 local musicians and concluded with Olympic Gold medallists Jamie Salé and David Pelletier presenting the Best Album award to one of the night’s big winners – Nickelback. In between, fans were treated to original songs and antics from hosts Barenaked Ladies.
In addition to the 2 hour Awards telecast, CTV broadcast “Countdown to the JUNOS” a one-hour pre-show which featured red-carpet arrivals by Alanis Morissette, Ben Heppner, Deborah Cox, David Usher, Diana Krall, Ennis Sisters, Glenn Lewis, Nelly Furtado, Nickleback, Shaggy, Sloan, and Premier Roger Grimes of Newfoundland and Labrador.
