Homelessness impacts all of us, whether or not we experience it ourselves

It’s a public health problem. They lack access to health care and often have chronic illness, made worse by tough living conditions: sleeping outside in all weather, eating low-quality food, and being in unsafe conditions that can make them feel vulnerable.

Most importantly, homelessness is a human tragedy. These community members live in tents and under bridges, vulnerable to inclement weather and violence, stripped of dignity and collective respect from society.

When we think about what causes homelessness, we often think about addition, mental illness, domestic violence, job loss, and disabilities. All those are accurate demographic characteristics of the homeless population.

Many folks who are homeless struggle with both mental illness and addiction, often using alcohol and/or drugs to self-medicate an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness. The commonality of homeless people is that there is a profound lack of support. Oftentimes, they don’t come from a background of family support and have lost it because mental illness and substance abuse damaged their relationships. Most often, they never had that support to begin with.

As one can imagine, overcoming homeless is a difficult feat, however, Eric Paskin was able to overcome his homeless and substance addiction, while opening a Rehabilitation Center to assist those who experienced a similar life path to him.

Paskin was in active addiction for a decade, and it was tough to overcome. He got clean in a homeless shelter after years of using drugs as a coping mechanism for all the feelings in life. Through his experiences, he wanted to build a longer table to help those who are overcoming addiction and battling homelessness themselves.

The traditional route for most folks who overcome addiction is to become a counselor, however, Paskin decided to take a road less traveled: opening up a rehabilitation center. Anyone who chooses to battle addiction should consider his advice: “It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and it seems daunting when your entire life all you’ve done is use drugs and alcohol to numb, cope, and survive.”

The past year’s epidemic exacerbated the number of folks who encounter mental health issues, hence, resulting in lack of self care. Paskin knows first-hand the loneliness and isolation faced when you don’t know who to go to for help, which is precisely why he opened Restore Health + Wellness Center.

His rehabilitation center offers comprehensive addiction treatment programs and uses proven methods to help you or a loved one break free from addiction. Their offerings provide medication assisted detox, which is a detox from drugs and alcohol in a safe and comfortable setting with 24/7 clinical support.

Additionally, the residential treatment takes place in a luxury, state-of-the art treatment facility that is designed to help you focus on your recovery. Lastly, they provide partial hospitalization, which is beneficial for folks who need intensive rehabilitation treatment for drug and alcohol dependence on an outpatient basis.

Eric is a case in point that it is possible to overcome addiction. He has inspired thousands of Restore Health + Wellness patients to live their life to the fullest potential. To learn more, visit the website here
