Cookbook author Lynne Bowman chatted about her bestselling book “Brownies for Breakfast: A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them.”

Bowman, who has diabetes herself, was able to reverse her numbers using the recipes in this book, as well as to sticking to a healthy lifestyle and diet. “The message of this book is not deprivation that makes you healthy. It’s about eating joyfully, high-quality, and beautifully all the time. It’s less expensive and tastier this way, if you are eating great food,” she said.

“Most of the food is over there in the produce aisle,” she added.

An Amazon best-selling author, Bowman has been featured at women’s expos throughout the country. She teamed up with acclaimed daytime actress Deidre Hall of “Days of Our Lives” to write and publish “Deidre Hall’s Kitchen Closeup” and “Deidre Hall’s How Does She Do It?”

Bowman has also worked as an actress, makeup artist, screenwriter, illustrator, legal journalist and television weather person. She also serves as president of the Pescadero Foundation.

Inspiration to write this cookbook

On her inspiration to compile these recipes, she said, “People who want to eat well and healthy. For years and years, I have been very interested in preventing and reversing chronic disease. The more I know about it, the more important I think it is.

“I am doing what I can because chronic disease what makes people poor, unhappy, and die too early… we can fix all that by eating well. I conceived this as a book so that people can keep it on their kitchen table.”

“Writing this book made me realize that I am very stubborn,” she said with a sweet laugh. “I hang in there. I learned that I wanted this more than I thought. I wanted people to know this, and it delights me every time when people are telling me that they love my recipes, and that the book is helping them. It only takes one or two of those positive remarks that keep me going for a while.”

Daily motivations

Regarding her daily motivations, she said, “I am a very lucky girl. I have a great life. I have a wonderful family, I live in a lovely place with a sweet house and a garden. I want that for everyone else who wants that.”

She also noted the “interesting” correlation that exists when one has health issues. “If you have health issues, you also have financial issues. They come together,” she acknowledged. “One of the ways, you can be more solid on the ground financially is by being healthier. 85 percent of the bankruptcies in this country are because of ill health, and that’s a huge majority of the bankruptcies.”

“You can solve those two problems (ill health and financial issues) just by eating better. By eating better, people can reverse these chronic diseases,” she said. “I am a grandma, and we always talk in recipes. We say ‘sit down, come and have some soup. Eat something good.’ That’s the grandma thing, and I am into it.”

“Eating good food is the key to good health,” she underscored.

The digital age

On being a published cookbook author in the digital age, Bowman said, “I have been doing this a long time. I published my first digital book in the ’90s, and I’ve been at it ever since.”

“It has been interesting to watch it all develop,” Bowman admitted. “Now, we have Print on Demand, which is a newer development.”

“This is my fourth book, and I am wondering if publishing on paper even matters anymore,” she said. “This industry changes so fast, the challenge is always to try and stay in front of the changes. People these days tend to be watching more cooking shows on TV, but they are not cooking. One of the the things I would love to see is more people actually making their own food.”

Stage of her life

On the title of the current chapter of her life, Bowman said, “Happy, Crazy, Granny.” “I am happier than ever, and I am having a great time. I’m loving the podcast industry,” she said. “Getting older is fabulous as long as you are healthy, and that’s what I want for everyone.”

Success

Bowman defined the word success simply as “reaching people” and “helping people.”
