Company Rushes to Make Extra Gold Medals

SALT LAKE CITY (voa) – The company that hand-crafted this year’s 477 Olympic medals did not have an extra set of gold ones available for the pairs figure skating.

But the company, OC Tanner, says it was ready when the frantic call came Friday from officials at the Salt lake City Winter Games: produce two more golds for the Canadian figure skaters, whose medals were upgraded from silver after a dispute over judging of the pairs competition.

Each medal usually requires about 20 hours of labor. But a company spokesman says it had on hand medal blanks, saving about 12 hours. It still had to scramble to find the company’s chief milling operator, who was on vacation, to produce the distinctive markings.

Eight hours later, the new pair was ready. The chief organizer of the 19th Winter Games, Mitt Romney, picked up the medals in an armored truck late Friday.

Each disc is 567 grams of gold-plated sterling silver. One side depicts an athlete bursting through flames carrying a torch. The other side features Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, holding a victory leaf. A small graphic representing the sport is engraved in a corner.

Unlike most medals in previous Olympics that look like large coins, the Salt Lake City Games went with a new design, resembling weathered stone.
