Comedian Berle and Entertainer Dudley Moore Are Dead

LOS ANGELES/NEW JERSEY (voa) – One of the first stars of television, U.S. comedian Milton Berle, is dead at the age of 93.

Berle died Wednesday in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles after suffering from numerous illnesses, including colon cancer.

The native New Yorker who became known as “Mr. Television” and “Uncle Miltie” got his start as a child actor in silent movies.

His first television show was an experimental broadcast in the late 1920s. The acerbic, cigar-smoking, vaudevillian comic went on to star in his own “Milton Berle Show” which began in 1948 and ran for more than 10 years.

He was also one of the first personalities to suffer from television over-exposure and burn-out, ending his career with minor film projects and comedy acts.

British entertainer Dudley Moore, known for his comedic roles in the films 10 and Arthur has died at his home in the east coast U.S. state of New Jersey.

Mr. Moore died Wednesday of pneumonia after battling a rare degenerative brain disorder called progressive supranuclear palsy, related to Parkinson’s disease. He was 66.

Mr. Moore, born in East London, began his entertainment career in Britain as a pianist and comedian. He composed the music and starred in the 1961 comedy review Beyond the Fringe which opened one year later on Broadway. Mr. Moore made his film debut playing a devil in the 1968 movie Bedazzled.

The Oxford educated entertainer received international fame for his 1979 role as a musician attracted to a perfect woman in the movie 10 and his work in 1981 as a lovable drunk in Arthur.

Mr. Moore, leaves behind his fourth wife, actress Suzy Kendall, and two sons.
