HAMILTON, Ontario – The night of the 2001 Juno Awards belonged to Nelly Furtado, Bruce Cockburn and Barenaked Ladies.
Furtado won four of the five Junos she was nominated for, including best single (I’m Like a Bird); best producer, along with Gerald Eaton and Brian West, (I’m Like a Bird and Turn Out the Light); best new solo artist and best songwriter.
Barenaked Ladies collected three awards. They won in the best album, best group and best pop album categories.
Canada’s most popular rock band of the ’90s — The Tragically Hip — won best rock album for their latest effort, Music@Work.
Toronto singer-songwriter-activist Bruce Cockburn’s induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame culminated the event. Cockburn has won 11 Junos for his 25 albums after 31 years in the biz and 20 gold and platinum records to call his own.
Cockburn’s induction was celebrated with performances by Barenaked Ladies, live from Prince George via satellite, Sarah Harmer, Terri Clark and Jann Arden.
Both Joni Mitchell and Neil Young won awards in their respective categories, although neither artist attended the ceremony.
