TORONTO, Digital Journal – Can’t make it to Paris au printemps? For movie fans, Cinéfranco may be the next best thing.
The first days of spring signal Toronto’s week-long celebration of Francophone film, Cinéfranco, starting March 26 and running until April 1, 2004.
Now in its seventh year, Cinéfranco will be held at the Royal Cinema on College St., a much larger venue than its previous home. It will screen 37 full-length French films from around the world with English subtitles. Many of them, such as Claude Miller’s La Petite Lili and Martin Provost’s La Ventre de Juliette, have already received much critical acclaim.
While Cinéfranco has earned a reputation for featuring fluffy, farcical comedies, this year’s theme has a noticably darker edge. Opening movie La Petite Lili, a joint French/Canadian production, is a moody account of a dysfunctional family that has earned four Cesar nods, France’s answer to the Academy Awards.
Tickets go on sale at the box office only, starting March 19. For the complete program and additional information check out
