Bush Portrait Unveiled In Austin, Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (voa) – President Bush returned to the Texas state capitol building in Austin Friday for the unveiling of his portrait honoring his six years’ service as governor there.

The President jokingly told the crowd assembled for the unveiling, “I want to thank you for coming to witness my hanging.”

The White House says the President went to Austin for the unveiling to express his gratitude to the people of Texas for the confidence they placed in him.

President Bush sat for the portrait, which cost $10,000, during a trip last year to his ranch in Crawford, Texas. The painting depicts him wearing a business suit with his hands folded.

Texas honors its governors with an official portrait, displayed in the capitol building after that governor leaves office. The portrait of President Bush is one of 50 on display there.
