NEW YORK — ”The Producers” star Matthew Broderick says he hopes the audience at the Tony Awards show he’s co-hosting with Nathan Lane doesn’t pelt them with tomatoes.
“Hopefully we’ll be amusing and not have people throw vegetables at us,” Broderick tells Time magazine in its issue on newsstands Monday.
Broderick and Lane co-star in “The Producers,” which is up for 15 awards at the June 3 show. When they were asked to host the 55th edition of the show, the nominations hadn’t been announced.
”(It) wasn’t like, `Oh, you’ve got 15 nominations, why don’t you also host it?”’ Broderick says.
He says he’s aware that some viewers might root against a “Producers” juggernaut.
Anyway, Broderick says, a clean sweep by “The Producers” is impossible because he’s up against Lane in the Best Actor in a Musical category.
“I’m pretty sure he’ll win,” Broderick says of his stagemate.
