British Olympic officials have enthusiastically greeted news that the government will add another $350 million in public funding to help boost the nation’s medal count at the 2012 London Games.

The annual budget unveiled by British Chancellor Gordon Brown Wednesday also included $175 million from the private sector and $525 million from lottery funding.

Brown told lawmakers in the House of Commons that almost $6 billion in funding had already been promised to the 2012 Olympic effort.

British Olympic Association chief executive Simon Clegg called the announcement excellent news and said the additional money will contribute to the host’s goal of finishing fourth in the medals table. Britain was 10th at the 2004 Athens Games.
