NEW YORK – In a provocative cover story in the January/February Issue of DETAILS magazine Jurgen Teller photographs Brad Pitt, Hollywood heartthrob and star of Guy Ritchie’s hot new film “Snatch,” in Budapest where he captured the gritty side of this marvelous looking man. We see a scruffy Pitt kicking back with pool cue in hand, sprawled out on a bed, bathing in a pool of
water and more … where you’ll witness Pitt like you’ve never seen or heard him before.
There are many firsts in the DETAILS interview. Pitt is notoriously
tight-lipped, even testy in interviews but DETAILS caught him on a good
day, when he was playful and revelatory. The sexy leading man shares
with DETAILS that his pet name for his new bride is simply and
affectionately, “Golden.” For the first time since his marriage to
Jennifer Aniston, he discusses marriage, kids and why he hates being a
pretty face. Here are highlights of the interview you won’t want to miss:
ON MARRIAGE TO JENNIFER ANISTON
A man who always enjoyed his bachelorhood, Pitt has finally taken the
plunge. “We’ve made a pact,” Pitt tells DETAILS, “Jen and I call it the
Adventure, we’ll see where it takes us.” Juggling film roles doesn’t
leave much-needed Newlywed time. “Distance is a beast,” he says.
ON HIS WEDDING DAY
Determined to keep the press at bay, the couple tried to ban the
airspace around the ceremony, but the FAA refused. “Jen and I both
wanted privacy but we also wanted it to be outside,” Pitt tells DETAILS.
“Jen finally said, ‘Look, if they get the picture, they get it. Don’t
forget what the day was about.’ She was right,” he says.
Upon saying their vows, a magical moment happened, describes Pitt, “The
press completely backed off,” he tells DETAILS. “It shocked the hell out
of me. I was like, ‘I love humanity!'” Now a committed man, Pitt says of
his wedding, “It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever been to.”
ON CHILDREN
Now hitched, the next question on everyone’s mind is of course,
children. Doesn’t look like kids anytime soon. Pitt says, “I’m still a
little selfish … I’m sure I’ll f*** them up somehow.”
ON GWENYTH PALTROW
Gwenyth Paltrow is reportedly heartbroken over the Pitt-Aniston union
but for Pitt that’s in the past, he mentions her only once during the
interview, referring to her coolly as, “Paltrow.”
ON EARLY ROLES
He’s now filming “The Spy Game,” a $90 million thriller directed by
“Enemy of the State’s” Tony Scott. Pitt admits, “I like playing a
soldier. It’s like being 7 years old again. But listen to these lines:
Target in sight. Do we still have the go? Repeat, do we still have the
go? Being a grown man, I feel silly.” Pitt quickly gets serious and
states frankly, “War is the dumbest thing I’ve sever heard of.”
GUY RITCHIE ON BRAD PITT
(JEN: I KNOW YOU WANTED ME TO TAKE THIS OUT BUT I FEEL ITS IMPT SINCE
ITS TIMELY INFO). After mega-films “Seven Years in Tibet” and “Meet Joe
Black,” Pitt wants to go indie. He was so impressed with Guy Ritchie’s
“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” that he immediately called the
English director, volunteering for any future roles, reports DETAILS.
Size of role nor paycheck mattered. Although Ritchie was wary at first,
Pitt was so convincing in his mastery of the obscure and indecipherable
“Pikey” accent, the director thought of subtitling his lines.
“Brad’s a film star in the Paul Newman-y sense,” says Ritchie. “I can
understand what all the kids go bonkers about … I don’t mean to blow
smoke up his ass, but he was experimental, interesting and intelligent.”
JULIA ROBERTS ON BRAD
“Brad never complains,” says Julia Roberts, his co-star in the upcoming
film, “The Mexican.” “If I had to describe him in two words, I’d say
sunny disposition. He radiates it to everyone around him … He’s a very
low-key groovy guy,” she continues, “I think Brad is entering new
territory with this part. He’s not handsome, he has no standout quality.
And he’s so earnest doing it.”
BENICIO DEL TORRO ON BRAD
“He gets a bad rap in the press for being just a pretty face. He’s not.”
ON CLINTON
Sometimes beauty can be a curse. Like the former president, Pitt admits,
“I knew I was lucky with the ladies,” but doesn’t respect covering up
past mistakes. “I think Clinton is a phony,” Pitt tells DETAILS, “Don’t
you wish he just said, ‘This is not your business. We’re handling it in
the privacy of our home.” Continuing, “I think Bill Clinton pattered
himself after Redford. He idolized him. It’s so blatant. Watch any
Redford movie with a cause and then watch Clinton. Clinton had this
quest to be liked,” says Pitt. “It’s the same with movie stars.”
ON HIS ASPIRATIONS AND RETIREMENT
Brad and Jennifer are currently restoring a Craftsman house in the hills
of Hollywood. He tells DETAILS of his love of architecture and penchant
for design, particularly the Arts and Crafts style of Frank Lloyd Wright
and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In fact, last summer he contributed
photographs to a coffee-table book on the Greene brothers, pioneers of
California’s bungalow style. He reflects on life after film, “I’d like
to design something like a city,” he tells DETAILS, “or a museum. I want
to do something hands on rather than just play golf which is the sport
of the religious right.”
His project for retirement, Pitt jokes, “I’m gonna design my own fleet
of trailers.” Changing his mind, he springs from his recliner. ‘No!’ he
cries. “I’m gonna record an album like Jennifer Lopez. It’ll be an
acoustic version of K.C. and the Sunshine Band. Then maybe I’ll design
a line of clothes like Puff Daddy, but all in synthetic fur…”
ON HIS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Now commanding $20 million a movie, Pitt’s debut in film was an extra in
“Less Than Zero.” He reflects, “I got to stand in the doorway during a
party. I got to wear a pink-and-white striped tank top and sunglasses —
I got paid 38 bucks.”
January/February Issue of DETAILS will reach the newsstands accross North America on January 26th.
