Bikes now outnumber cars in Copenhagen

On a daily basis, around 252,600 cars are used in Copenhagen. That’s compared to around 265,700 bicycles that are used. The growth of bikes being used is in part of an additional 35,080 new bikes that were added to the daily used means of transport.

Since 1970, the municipality has kept track of how many cars and bikes are used. In 1970, there were about 351,100 cars being used and only 100,071 bicycles being used. Over the last 20 years, the number of bicycles being used daily increased by more than 65 percent.

Throughout the years, the city has invested heavily in cycling. It has invested more than 1 billion Kroner into infrastructure projects, which includes 17 bicycle bridges. The bridges allows cyclists to access the city center without competing with vehicles.

Morton Kabell, the mayor of technical and environmental affairs, said Copenhagen is a constantly evolving goal. He said within 10 years, the central core of Copenhagen will be car-free. He added that the city is striving for all commutes to be made by bicycle across the Greater Copenhagen area by 2025. As of now, the figure stands at 41 percent.

Kabell said the figure would probably fall after the metro extension opens in 2019. He said the important thing for him is to have a green transport system.
