Author-Counselor Condemns Dr. Laura

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Bonnie Kaye, author of “Is He Straight, A Checklist for Women Who Wonder”, and specialist in straight/gay marriage counseling, condemned Dr. Laura Schlessinger for her endorsement of a book on converting homosexuals to heterosexuality.

Ms. Kaye accused the national radio and television personality of not getting all the facts before writing the forward for the book “Coming Out Straight” by Richard Cohen, a former leader of the Reverend Moon cult movement. Although Cohen references the Unification Church several times in his book, he never reveals the high position he held, how he was brainwashed “straight” in the 1970’s, or the name Reverend Moon.

Kaye has been counseling straight women and men who discover their spouses’ homosexuality at some point in their marriages for 16 years. She was a pioneer in this field during the 1980’s, appearing on national and local television and radio shows exposing how millions of women and men find themselves unknowingly in marriages with a gay partner.

Coincidentally, her book was published in the same month as Cohen’s last summer. Ironically, Kaye had written about her past personal relationship with Cohen, which began in high school and ended when the leaders of the Moonies refused to allow her to see him anymore for fear of influencing him to leave the movement. She had not had contact with Cohen since 1978, but viewed him on a 20/20 segment in the early 1990’s when he appeared with his Korean wife discussing how gays can become straight through therapy. Kaye states that Cohen never told about his cult involvement and brainwashing on that segment and accused 20/20 after the airing of not portraying an accurate picture. She wrote about Cohen in her book to show how people can be brainwashed into changing their sexuality.

According to Kaye, “This type of thinking promotes the spread of homophobia. As long as people think that gay people can be “converted” to heterosexuality, they will always think that homosexuality is a choice. People do not “choose” to be gay. Society needs to start understanding that people are born differently so they can begin to accept them for who they are.” Kaye continued, “As long as people believe that gays can change to being straight through therapy, we will continue to see the disaster of gay people marrying straight people hoping for a “miracle cure” for something that is not a disease.”

Kaye estimates that there are over 3 million women married to gay men in this U.S.A. She has counseled and helped over 6,000 women since 1984 to unravel the confusion when they learn their husbands are gay. She has worked with hundreds of gay men helping to come out to their wives.

Kaye expressed disgust when she saw the publicized forward written by Dr. Laura Schlessinger praising Cohen’s way of converting homosexuals through therapy that he practices. “This is the kind of thinking that destroys and demoralizes the human soul, taking away the real quality of life for gay people. I would like to think that Dr. Schlessinger was not aware of Cohen’s background before making such a blunder. It is time for her to acknowledge this mistake and to take back her endorsement.”
