Ancient Greek Statue Unearthed

ATHENS (voa) – A 2,600-year-old statue found in an ancient Greek burial ground appears to be another masterpiece by an acclaimed, but anonymous, ancient artist.

German archaeologists have unearthed the nearly complete statue identified as a kouros. It is believed to be the work of an unidentified sculptor known only as Dipylos, named after the place where his first work was found.

The new kouros was recently found along with two lion sculptures and a sphinx in the ancient Kerameikos district of central Athens. The finds date back to the 6th century B.C.

Similarities in features among the discoveries have led experts to believe they were created by the same artist or workshop. German archeologist Wolf-Dietrich Niemeier says the newly uncovered kouros also resembles the Dipylos statue in New York.

One kouros by the Dipylos artist is at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, while another is in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

The statues were created before the Greek golden age when naturalist and classical works first appeared.
