Your Favorite Color spoke about their new single “Less in Love” and being a part of the digital age.
The group features is comprised of Matt Warren on lead vocals and keyboardist Nicky Neighbors, along with Cameron Pearson on bass, Matthew Fosmire on drums (also known as “Foz”) and guitarist David Silveria.
How did ‘Less in Love’ come about?
The idea for the song came from the band’s first time in London. We spent the night before our show getting to know the city and taking the tube around.
That feeling of being in a new place felt so good and it made problems of the past feel so small-specifically problems from past relationships.
In the heat of a moment, it’s easy to get fixated on the small issues that feel very heavy or negative. It’s funny when you go out in the world those tunnel vision thoughts/feelings all disappear.
The song talks to an ex lover in that tone….quite sarcastically… that maybe there’s a bigger picture to all this than the small things they’re choosing to focus on.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
Our inspiration at its core comes from one another. There’s no better way for Matt to get inspired with a vocal melody or lyric than the band admitting an energy with their instruments. Being a band is all about playing off one another.
Over the years, it often feels like we can read each other’s minds and there is this unexplainable flow that we enter once we’re all in the same room creating together.
Of course, we all have a wide range of musical inspirations from a number of artists, but at the core, we play off one another.
What do your plans for the future include?
The future is never certain, but that’s what we love about this industry. You never know what opportunities will come next.
Sometimes it can be difficult in those waiting periods, but we make do with our time by writing new music and creating. After all, that’s what we love to do the most.
Right now, we are the most excited about the new music we have been recording and can’t wait to release it. Of course, following up our releases with playing live performances is what will come next.
How does it feel to be a band in the digital age? (Now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent)
I think there are a lot of positives and negatives about it. Every decade had its challenges. The positive thing about this digital age is that the opportunity to make something happen on your own accord is seemingly endless.
Artists are able to produce from their bedrooms and market entirely on their own of course that comes with the challenge of learning how to do those things.
It will be interesting to see what shifts will occur in the future but as of right now we are enjoying expressing ourselves on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
What is your advice for young and emerging artists?
Follow your gut and don’t stop creating or performing. Above all, make sure you love what you’re doing. If the music is paying you by filling your soul, then you can never lose.
Sticking with it can be difficult at times, especially when it seems like you’re not making leaps and bounds of success, but there’s never a good reason to stop if you love what you do.
Also failing is good. That’s when we learn the most. The only true way to fail is to stop trying. Don’t lose sight of that!
Which artists would you like to do a dream collab with?
Robert Smith from The Cure would be a dream come true. Also, doing something with Gorillaz would be a full circle moment for Matt.
What would you like to say to your fans about the new music?
We hope you love it as much as we do! Thank you to those of you who have stuck with us over the years and if you’re just finding out about us now, we are grateful to have found you. All the love.
