Windows 10 coming to Xbox One on November 12

As Windows Central reports, Microsoft’s head of Xbox Phil Spencer revealed the date during the company’s live launch event for Halo 5. With release just two weeks away, Microsoft will be working hard to iron out all the bugs in the current preview release of the update.
The New Xbox One Experience is described as “the fastest, most social Xbox experience ever.” The console’s interface has been sped up by basing the software on top of Windows 10 and the focus has been changed to emphasize ease of use and quick social interactions.
After installing the update, users will find their old tile-based horizontal home-screen replaced by a vertically-scrolling list of news, announcements and content updates. There is one-click access to game hubs, the Xbox Store and the OneGuide TV planner and more social content and activity updates from friends.
The new Xbox Guide has reverted back towards the styling of the Xbox 360’s Guide, making it accessible without leaving a game. Players can start party chats, respond to messages and manage quick settings such as headset volume on-the-fly without having to hide the gameplay.
Gamers with vast libraries of Xbox 360 titles will be able to start reliving them again on their Xbox One starting with the first update release. Microsoft’s big reveal of backwards compatibility became one of the most lauded announcements from this year’s E3 conference, gaining instant player support as it has been of the top-requested features since the Xbox One’s launch.
The feature will debut with a healthy selection of compatible games but Microsoft has pledged to continue working with developers to add more to the catalogue over time. Backwards compatibility is powered by an Xbox 360 emulator that runs on the Xbox One and can provide access to the 360 features used by the older games.
The New Xbox One Experience isn’t complete yet and there are some features that will be missing at launch. Notably, Cortana support is not yet ready and will only be coming to the preview program later this year ahead of a public release in early 2016.
When the digital assistant arrives, players will be able to use all the features of Cortana that are already available on Windows 10 as well as some Xbox One-exclusive commands. Cortana will be able to take screenshots, send messages to friends, check if other players are online and start party chats from within gameplay, letting the user concentrate on winning while Cortana manages interaction with friends and content in the background.
Microsoft hasn’t said whether preview users will be getting a new release of the update before its public launch but the program will be continuing after November 12. Going forward, users will be receiving monthly updates as with the original Xbox One dashboard, keeping the console fresh throughout the holiday season.
