On Sept. 7, you can start evolving life from scratch. Will Wright’s highly anticipated game about nurturing a single-cell organism will go on sale in early September and will be available for PC, Mac, Nintendo DS, and cellphones.
Digital Journal — It’s been touted as the game to watch in 2008. Its creator was headlined on the cover of tech magazines since development began in 2005. And now Spore, Will Wright’s evolutionary game of life creation, will finally be available on Sept. 7, according to an announcement from Electronic Arts and game-maker Maxis.
Spore allows players to start off as single-cell organisms that can grow into mature creatures. The game will let players use the Net to allow animals to roam virtual universes to meet, and sometimes wage war on, the creations of other players. Not surprisingly, the maker of Spore is also the brains behind The Sims video game series.
In a news release, Will Wright said: “We’re in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can’t wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year.”
The statement also succinctly summarizes Spore’s M.O.: “Create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even UFOs.”
While the announcement said Spore would be available for PC, Mac, Nintendo DS and cellphones, no mention was made regarding consoles. But last year, Wright confirmed Spore would be released for Nintendo Wii owners.
