Canadian actress Wendy Crewson chatted about starring in “When Hope Calls” Season 2 on Great American Family.
‘When Hope Calls’
“When Hope Calls” is a spinoff of Oke’s iconic book series When Calls the Heart and followed a pair of sisters, Lillian Walsh (Morgan Kohan) and Grace Bennett (Jocelyn Hudon) to the town of Brookfield, circa 1916.
It is a family drama that is centered on the town’s orphanage and its residents who meet tremendous challenges while creating a hopeful, faith-filled community on the cusp of change in the frontier town while nurturing the children in their care.
“That was fun,” she admitted. “We’ve been doing it for some years now, and it feels like you are doing summer theater with your best friends. You are up there in North Bay, and it’s always a beautiful set with great clothes, and everyone is sweet. It is really fun to do.”
“I am thrilled that Great American Family picked up this show,” she exclaimed. “It’s a good show and it needed a home. This series is different enough where it can stand on its own.”
Working with a new cast of actors and Nick Bateman
On working with a new cast of actors, she said, “They’ve injected new blood into this show; it’s fun.”
“Nick Bateman is great,” she revealed. “What a great addition to the cast he was. I love having Nick there; they let him keep his beard and they really put a little edge in the show this year.”

Playing Tess Stewart in ‘When Hope Calls’
Crewson was drawn to her character, Tess Stewart, for several reasons. “I love that she is mean,” she said with a sweet laugh. “She is grumpy, and she doesn’t have to wear a dress.”
Lessons learned from this series
On the lessons learned from this show, she said, “This series taught me that I can’t ride a horse very well. I used to be able to ride a horse but as you get older, I get more nervous.”
Stage of her life
On the title of the current chapter of her life, she said, “The Farm.”
“We bought a farm three years ago, and now, my life is ‘When Hope Calls’,” she said. “I am on the farm, I am working all the time, I am wearing a hat, and I am out in the yard. It’s all gardening, which I love,” she explained.
Superpower of choice
Her superpower of choice would be to “teleport to different places.” “I would teleport to different places so I don’t have to get on those long plane rides,” she explained.
‘Tracker’
In other Wendy Crewson news, she guest stars in the hit CBS drama series “Tracker,” where she plays Mary Dove Shaw, the mother of Colter Shaw (played by protagonist Justin Hartley).
“I play Justin Hartley’s mom,” she said. “Wait until y’all see the finale,” she foreshadowed. “We just shot it in Vancouver; it is great! Buckle up.”
“It is so great working with Justin Hartley and Ken Olin; they are both fantastic,” she exclaimed.
Success
On her definition of the word success, Crewson said, “Success means being able to pick and choose what jobs I do, I can have my big garden, and my kids are good… those are the things that matter most.”

Closing thoughts on ‘When Hope Calls’
For fans and viewers, she remarked about “When Hope Calls” Season 2, “I hope viewers feel a sense of community as we did up there. It was a real family, and I hope they get that same sense from it. I did this mainly for the wardrobe.”
“When Hope Calls” is available to stream on Pure Flix and Sunday nights at 8 p.m. EST only on Great American Family.
