NetherRealm Studios posted a few new trailers and have made a new announcement regarding Mortal Kombat X, the 10th direct installment of the series, which is scheduled to release on April 14th. The first trailer gives the confirmation that Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Cassie Cage’s parents, will be part of the playable cast of Mortal Kombat X.
Johnny Cage is a given because NetherRealm Studios recently announced his return, but he also made his debut appearance in Mortal Kombat X: Blood Ties #9. It is confirmed that Johnny and Sonya got hitched sometime after the events of Mortal Kombat 9, where Raiden defeated and killed Shao Kahn, but ended up getting divorced sometime before the events of Mortal Kombat X.
That should not be surprising since Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are not really compatible marriage partners, but they manage to maintain a “professional” working relationship.
The trailer also shows the possibility of Shinnok and Kenshi’s return to the franchise.
It is apparent that Earthrealm serves as a refugee camp for displaced dissidents escaping the ongoing civil war in Outworld between Kotal Kahn and Mileena’s forces. You can see Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade fighting against Shinnok, introduced in Mortal Kombat 4, a fallen Elder God.
Earthrealm’s protection has fallen on the shoulders of the Cage family.
NetherRealms has also confirmed a guest character for Mortal Kombat X, Jason Voorhees, who will be part of the Kombat Pack DLC. The Kombat Pack will also feature two Klassic Mortal Kombat Kombatants and another special guest character.
Jason Voorhees is the iconic antagonist of the Friday the 13th series.
It is unknown who the other special guest character will be.
The possibilities are Colonel Al Dillon, the Predator, or Spawn. Carl Weathers, who played Dillon in Predator, has given permission to use his character in the game.
Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, says that NetherRealms can use Spawn if it wants to. This is because of a recent agreement between McFarlane and Warner Brothers.
There is also the unfortunate announcement that the last-generation console and PC versions of Mortal Kombat X will be delayed until this summer. The April 14th release date only applies to the Xbox One and Playstation 4 version.
