Project Dot Hack fans should be delighted to know that FUNimation is planning a scheduled home video release of the series within the .hack// franchise. FUNimation has streamed “coming soon” trailers for .hack//Roots, .hack//SIGN, and .hack//Legend of the Twilight. This is part of a franchise that also encompasses real-time role-playing game (RPG) titles such as .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//G.U, and more.
All of the series center on the role-playing game (RPG) known as The World.
If you enjoy anime titles like Accel World, Sword Art Online, and/or Log Horizon, then you should enjoy watching the .hack// series.
.hack//Roots takes place years after the events of .hack//SIGN and .hack//Legend of the Twilight, where a player named Haseo is the main star. He is known to be the player behind Sora, from .hack//SIGN, who woke up from a coma.
Sora was placed in a coma near the end of .hack//SIGN when he defied the villains to allow the heroes to escape. He was data drained as punishment, where his consciousness turned into Skeith. You encounter Skeith as the final boss in .hack//Infection, which leads to Kite and his party freeing Sora’s consciousness in the later games.
CyberConnect2, the developer of Project Dot Hack, came up with the brilliant plan to cross-pollinate the anime and game titles.
Haseo joins The World R:2, which released in 2016, and gets killed by a player. He becomes a PK killer, a player that goes around hunting down player killers. Ovan takes notice and invites him to join his guild, the Twilight Brigade, to help him search for “The Key of the Twilight.”
Virus cores from .hack//Infection and its follow-up titles play a key role in .hack//Roots. It is also important to know that .hack//Roots sets up the story for the .hack//G.U RPG title.
.hack//SIGN is the series that started everything.
The story takes place in 2005, where the Pluto’s Kiss virus wipes the Internet and causes mass chaos.
Altimit OS, the fictional OS in the .hack// universe, is left unharmed. The CC Corporation develops The World for Altimit OS, which is popular. .hack//SIGN centers on Tsukasa, a Wavemaster-class player, who is trapped in the game.
The story ultimately centers on Tsukasa trying to free her consciousness from The World. It ultimately leads to the events of the .hack//Infection game series and .hack//Liminality OVAs, where the two stories take place at the same time. This was Bandai Namco’s way of getting consumers to buy all four titles because each one had one episode of the four-part OVA.
.hack//Legend of the Twilight takes place after the end of the .hack//Infection series.
Kite and Blackrose from .hack//Infection saved everybody, but their player avatars were banned from The World. Twin siblings Shugo and Rena, separated from each other, join The World in .hack//Legend of the Twilight and win those same avatars from a contest.
Shugo, as Kite’s avatar, meets Aura and receives the iconic Twilight Bracelet.
Look forward to the Project Dot Hack anime series soon. Perhaps FUNimation will also release the .hack//Liminality 4-part OVA in the near future, too.
