Square Enix, which specializes in role-playing game (RPG) titles for home and portable consoles, is serious about expanding into arcade consoles.
The company unveiled its first trailer for the upcoming arcade port of Dissidia Final Fantasy, a 1-versus-1 fighting game originally released in 2008 for the Playstation Portable (PSP) and was followed by Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy in 2011 also for the PSP.
Dissidia Final Fantasy‘s arcade port will not be 1-versus-1 like its PSP predecessor.
The arcade port be in a 3-versus-3 format and the game play will be similar to games like Gunslinger Stratos 2, Rise of Incarnate, and other similar titles.
Confirmed playable characters are Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, Terra Branford from Final Fantasy VI, Claire “Lightning” Ferron from Final Fantasy XIII, and Onion Knight from Final Fantasy III.
Square Enix will likely reveal more information on April 10th.
The original story centered on a battle between the harmonic goddess Cosmos and the chaotic god Chaos within a world that is parallel to the world of the first Final Fantasy title. Cosmos and Chaos, respectively, summon the heroes and villains from the many Final Fantasy titles to take their sides.
Final Fantasy 012 Dissidia continues the ongoing war between Cosmos and Chaos, where the threatening Manikens are introduced.
Square Enix is working with Dimps on another similar arcade game titled School of Ragnarok, which takes place in some world during the “Age of Warring Academies.” Players represent one of the “Ten Great Schools” in this interscholastic bloodbath and can play online against other players across Japan.
