It has been two years since Beyond the Boundary aka Kyokai no Kanata aired in Japan and streamed internationally online. The ending was saddening to watch if you did see Beyond the Boundary, which is available in North America through Crunchyroll’s streaming service.
Akihito Kanbara, revealed to be the titular “Beyond the Boundary” near the end of the series, was separated from co-protagonist Mirai Kuriyama and it seemed that she faded from existence as the price to pay in order to save his life.
One would assume that is the end of the story, but that is far from the case because the series will receive two films.
A new trailer has been streamed by Kyoto Animation to promote Beyond the Boundary The Movie: I’ll Be There – Future Chapter aka Gekijo-Ban Kyokai no Kanata -I’ll Be There- Mirai-hen, which will hit theaters across Japan on April 25th on the same day that Parasyte: The Final Chapter will screen across Japanese theaters.
The movie’s trailer gives the suggestion that Akihito will try to rescue Mirai from wherever location she is trapped in since “sacrificing her life” to save his life.
Beyond the Boundary will receive a compilation film, titled Beyond The Boundary The Movie: Kako-Hen, will hit theaters in Japan on March 14th. The film will condense all 12 episodes of the original Beyond the Boundary series.
Beyond the Boundary The Movie: I’ll Be There – Future Chapter takes place one year after the events of the series.
The series and the movies are adapted from Nagomu Torii’s original light novel series that runs in KA Esuma Bunko.
It is a dark supernatural romantic comedy that centers on Akihito and Mirai in a world where the supernatural secretly coexists with humans. Akihito is half-human and half-yomu, which makes him an outcast from both societies. Mirai is one of the underworld warriors, but is shunned because of her unique ability of manipulating blood.
This ultimately becomes a romance story between two social outcasts that work together to protect their school and town from dangerous threats.
