Singer-songwriter Valerie Broussard chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about her new single “Drive,” her songwriting inspirations, and cover of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls.

“Drive” is the lead single from her upcoming breakthrough EP “Voyager.” The music and the lyrics of “Drive” were penned by Broussard and Lena Leon, and it was produced by Josh Murty. “It’s definitely a high-energy song,” she said. “I ended up cutting that vocal three times. Lena Leon came on via Zoom and Josh patched her in to my headphones so that I could hear her spoke to me, and that is the vocal that is the final product.”

“Drive” by Valerie Broussard earned a favorable review from Digital Journal. “I hope people can make some nice memories with this song,” she said. “I want people to play it in the car and take a road trip with it.”

On her music and songwriting inspirations, she said, “I am very autobiographical, so it’s pretty much whatever is going on in my life. It’s a pretty loud diary so that’s where most of my songwriting comes from.”

For Broussard, covering “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls was “so much fun to do.” “It was really incredible to get to cover it,” she admitted.

On being an artist in the digital age, she said, “It’s interesting. You can reach fans from all over the world that you didn’t think that you would necessarily have. These days, in the unfortunate times that we are living in, you can reach fans in a much safer way. It’s a different vibe than it would have been in the ’90s, but I am grateful for the ability to reach lots of different fans especially in these strange times.”

For young and aspiring artists, Broussard encouraged them “to have patience.” “Everything is going to take more time than you think it’s going to take,” he said.

Broussard listed Ruston Kelly and John Mayer as her dream male duet choices in the music business. “I love John Mayer and I have worshipped his music forever,” she said.

On the title of the current chapter of her life, she said, “Reemerging.”

Regarding her definition of the word success, she said, “Originally, it would mean getting towards every single goal that I set. Now, it is making sure that I am constantly climbing up the ladder. Success means always moving forward, one foot after the other.”
