The play was written and performed by Robbins. The production is a delightfully comic and poignant riff of the foibles of love from a grown-up woman’s viewpoint. “I started writing a book, and then I realized that it was actually a play. I literally spent four weeks writing every single day,” she said. “I started writing a novel that I thought was historical fiction, since I didn’t want to call it a memoir,” she added, with a sweet laugh.
In addition, Robbins will be filming the independent movie The Aspern Papers, which was based on the novel by Henry James, starring Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter Jolie Richardson, as well as Jonathan Rhys Meyers (who is best known as Henry VIII in The Tudors). “I am so excited. I can’t wait to do this movie,” she said, on sharing the bill with that cast of actors. “I hope he doesn’t cut my head off,” she said, jokingly about Meyers (and his previous role as the Tudor monarch).
Several months ago, Robbins’ filmBlowtorch was released, where she played Ann Willis, alongside actor Billy Baldwin. “Working with Billy was fantastic. He and I had the exact same work ethic,” she said. “It was really great working together.”
In the daytime world, Robbins is best known for her acting work on such soap operas as One Life to Live, Ryan’s Hope and All My Children. “Those were a long time ago, but I think it is the single best training for an actor. I loved them and I loved having the steady job. I learned 40 pages of dialogue a night, so it was not that hard to memorize 90 pages of dialogue for L.O.V.E.R. Daytime really trains you to memorize.”
“You have to be your own C.E.O. You can’t expect your agent or manager to do it all. You need to treat it like a business and it doesn’t happen by itself,” she told aspiring actors. “Young actors should not audition until they are really seasoned, and you have one opportunity to make that first impression. If you disappoint a casting director, they are not going to have you come back in. Be ready, go in and give it your best shot.”
For her fans, she concluded, “Please come. You won’t regret it. There is something in it for everyone. People have been leaving the theater and reassessing their lives, and they have been learning something new.”
