Country singer-songwriter Troy Cartwright chatted about his new single “How Smart I Am.”

Inspiration for the song

On the idea for the song, he said, “I just thought it was a funny title for a song. When we wrote it, it always stuck with me because it’s witty and simple but it actually says a lot.”

Regarding his music and songwriting inspirations, he said, “In my career, I’ve been inspired by so many things, all of my life experiences, my friends, and movies I’ve watched – it just depends on when a title, a lyric, or a melody hits me.”

Future plans

On his future plans, he revealed, “I’ve been working on a ton of new music that is extremely important to me as a songwriter so stay tuned.”

The digital age

On being a musician in the digital age, Cartwright said, “At times, it’s overwhelming but also there is more opportunity than ever.”

“There are a lot of pressure on me all the time – I don’t have the perspective to know if it was like this 20 or 40 years ago but I just try and work hard to promote my music in the best organic way possible and to not make myself too crazy over it,” he elaborated.

Dream female duet choice in music: Sheryl Crow

Cartwright listed Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sheryl Crow as his dream female duet choice in music. “I’m really inspired by Sheryl Crow,” he admitted. “It would be wild to get to sing with her – I just think she is truly great.”

Success

On his definition of the word success, he said, “Every day getting to do this and live out this dream is a success in my book.”
