Trailer released for Dave Grohl’s Sound City documentary

Call it an ode to a bygone era. Sound City, directed by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, looks at the popular recording studio of the same name. The trailer, recently released online, includes interview snippets from Tom Petty, Lars Ulrich, John Fogerty, Mick Fleetwood, Neil Young, Trent Reznor, Frank Black and many, many other musicians.

The film also explores the advent of digital music recording, making an old-school studio such as Sound City obsolete. Musicians and owners affiliated with Sound City are asked what they think about the transition from analog to digital.

The studio was synonymous with making hit records, such as Nirvana’s Nevermind, Tool’s Undertow, Tom Petty’s Wild Flowers and Fleetwod Mac’s Rumors. It ran from 1970 to 2011.

Sound City will make its official debut at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival running January 17 through 27 in Park City, Utah. The trailer says the doc will be released in February, but it’s unclear how many theatre will feature the film.

Grohl says the film has been a labour of love.

“As a first time director, I am humbled to be able to share my passion for songwriting and storytelling with this incredible cast of legendary musicians as seen through the extraordinary story of America’s greatest unsung recording studio, Sound City,” said Grohl via statement, Spin writes.. “Being included in this group of artists is a true honor, and the Sundance Film Festival is the perfect place to premiere a film about craft, integrity, and passion for art. I am over the moon!”
