It’s offensive, crude and bound to attract monumental attention. The trailer for Bruno was released yesterday and it once again displays the guerilla humour Sacha Baron-Cohen honed in his debut film Borat.
Bringing Borat to the world wasn’t shocking enough for comedian Sacha Baron-Cohen. Now his character Bruno will strut the catwalk in a self-titled film set for a July 10 release.
Bruno is a character made popular by Baron-Cohen in his comedy show Da Ali G Show. He’s known as an Austrian fashionista who promotes a gay lifestyle, supports gay marriage and wears fishnet shirts.
Yesterday, Universal released the red-band trailer, and it immediately flew across the Web. Embedded above (for adults eyes only), the trailer shows Bruno — a flamboyantly gay “Austrian” — putting himself in awkward situations: he hunts with Southern Americans, walks down Brooklyn streets with Orthodox Jews wearing barely anything, and storms the Milan fashion week catwalk.
Similar to Borat, this film seems to be unscripted when Bruno dives into scenarios, such as walking into a shopping mall chained to a male “slave.” He also films himself getting whipped by a dominatrix.
According to the trailer, Bruno also appears on a talk show with a black baby he adopted, trains with military personnel and attends a swingers’ club.
In 2006, Baron-Cohen’s Borat grossed more than $128 million at the box office. Coupled with the film’s success was the controversy surrounding how the film crew fooled interviewees into participating in the project.
