Tony award-winning actress Tonya Pinkins chatted about starring in “My First Ex-Husband” Off-Broadway.

Randal Myler directed this Off-Broadway play from a script by actress, comedian and TV host Joy Behar (“The View”).

The show is being played at the MMAC Theater in New York City. It is a collection of stories about a total of eight women and their ex-husbands (each actress plays two different characters).

Pinkins on ‘My First Ex-Husband’

“We are having a really fun time,” Pinkins admitted. “It’s nice being with mature women, and the stories are funny, and they are very relatable to the audience, and it’s fun.”

Pinkins on playing her two characters

She is drawn to her two characters in “My First Ex-Husband” for the following reasons: “Most of the times, I play the serious person, so it’s really nice to showcase my humorous chops.”

Lessons learned from this play

On the lessons learned from this show, she revealed, “It taught me that I’m very impatient.”

Working with the cast

On working with the cast of leading ladies, Pinkins said, “It is great to see Susan Lucci again. I’ve always admired Judy Gold so it’s fun to work with her. Judy has given me little notes to tweak things and make it even better.”

“Cathy Moriarty is wonderful. It’s a great group of people. Also, the company manager Adam Jellicorse is great,” she added.

Future plans

Regarding her future plans, she shared, “I have a play that I wrote called ‘Jeffrey Manor’ that will be at The Apollo’s Jonelle Procope Theatre on April 12th.”

“We have two presentations, and a talkback with Karen Hunter in between,” he said.

“On Monday, April 14th, a documentary about me will be played at the Black Spectrum Theatre in Queens,” she revealed.

“I am on a mission to see all the countries in the world. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling. I am up to 88 countries,” she added.

Pinkins on being a part of ‘All My Children’

She recalled her time on the hit ABC daytime drama “All My Children.”

“That was the show I grew up watching ever since I was seven years old,” she said. “It was like a real dream to be in something that I had watched growing up.”

Dialogue-heavy

When asked how she handled being dialogue-heavy, she said, “Some people have a gift. We would have 90 pages sometimes a day. I am one of those people who is fortunate.”

“If the story makes sense to me, I can do it, especially since it doesn’t have to be letter perfect. It has been really great since I have been doing Tyler Perry’s ‘Sistas’ for Seasons 7 and 8, and they do 150 pages a day,” she elaborated.

“Tyler Perry films 22 episodes in nine days, so ‘All My Children’ was a good preparation for that,” she added.

Stage of her life

On the title of the current chapter of her life, she said, “Free and Easy.”

Success

On her definition of the word success, she said, “Having the freedom to choose how I spend my day and getting the opportunity to travel, and spend time in indigenous communities just living with them the way they live.”

“Travel is probably the No. 1 thing in my life,” she admitted. “My children are all independent and healthy, and I’ve made it this far, and I am still alive and still working. I feel very blessed.”

Message for her fans and supporters

For her fans and supporters, she said, “Thank you for remembering me and for being so generous whenever I see you. I just appreciate that I’ve had the opportunity to have longevity; it’s a gift and a blessing.”

Closing thoughts on ‘My First Ex-Husband’

For fans and viewers, she concluded about the show, “I want people to just feel seen and to have a good laugh. There is nothing better than when you can laugh at yourself.
