Tony winner Danny Burstein is headed to the new production of “Gypsy” on Broadway.
Burstein will be playing the role of Herbie opposite six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, who is playing the female lead Rose, in “Gypsy.”
The show is directed by six-time Tony Award-winning director George C. Wolfe. The show is suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.
The musical features a book by Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents, music by Tony and Academy Award winner Jule Styne, and lyrics by Tony, Grammy, Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Sondheim. It is choreography by four-time Tony nominee Camille A. Brown.
The performances of “Gypsy” will begin on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Broadway’s newly-renovated Majestic Theatre, and the show will officially open on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
In a post on social media, Burstein remarked, “The cat’s out of the bag. I am so looking forward to this.”
In 2022, Burstein was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from Queens College. He has appeared in 19 Broadway shows which include Moulin Rouge! The Musical (which won him the Tony Award for playing Harold Zidler), My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Follies, South Pacific, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, among others.
Throughout his respected career in the entertainment and theatre industry, Burstein has received the Tony Award (seven nominations), the Drama League Award (three nominations), two Drama Desk Awards (four nominations), four Outer Critics Circle Awards (out of six nominations), and three Grammy nominations.
Danny Burstein is the son of Queens College Philosophy Professor Harvey Burstein and Virginia Vega Burstein ’78. Burstein began acting in community theatre and summer stock while attending the High School of the Performing Arts.
Burstein delivered the Commencement Address at Queens College in June of 2022.
Burstein started working professionally while still at Queens College, where he earned a BA in drama before completing an MFA in acting at the University of California, San Diego in 1990.
