The 12th and final episode of The Rolling Girls, titled “The Future Is In Our Hands,” is currently streaming on FUNimation for paid subscribers. Free subscribers can watch the final episode on April 4th.
The Rolling Girls’ story comes to an end, where things get intense.
I was surprised when things started to get ridiculous with the military vehicles and the fancy flying aircraft. The Rolling Girls did fine with Nozomi and her crew traveling around to mediate conflicts between nations, but I do feel that the “militaristic” motif near the end may have hurt the story a little bit.
With the secret base being attacked, Kuniko inadvertently reveals that the moonlight stones are not the source of power.
I busted in laughter when Kuniko and Maccha took advantage of the revelation to beat the s—t out of each other. This ultimately makes me curious on why the Bests possess immense fighting power. Rhetorically asking, where do they receive their power if they do not require the moonlight stones?
The suspicion was in the back of my mind when the girls met Mr. Dandy, who did not possess a moonlight stone.
This whole episode becomes a total mindf—k because robots are now involved, where the concept of aliens was introduced a few episodes ago.
Kaguya’s activation of Daimon, the mecha, reminded me of No More Heroes 2 when Travis Touchdown summoned Glastonbary for an upcoming boss battle. I think one of the people associated with The Rolling Girls is a fan of No More Heroes.
I also think that one or a few of the people in production may have played Xenoblade Chronicles a few times before coming up with The Rolling Girls. The concept of mecha was nonexistent in The Rolling Girls until the previous episode, which confused me.
Why introduce robots near the end of the series?
But I have no problem with the alien angle, which explains why Chiaya knew the other girls from the past. I was shocked, but not surprised that the girls actually met each other years before the story took place.
I was mostly satisfied with the ending as time passes since their adventure.
Nozomi continued being a Rest for the Propellers, where she follows Maccha. I am not surprised since she has been content with her role since the beginning. Yukina decided to become a mangaka and Ai is training hard to become a drifting Best.
But I’m still curious on the source of the Bests’ powers since it was revealed that the moonlight stones had no role to play. It makes me wonder if Ai will even be able to achieve that level of fighting skill, which is possible.
I liked the story, but felt that it was weakened by the sudden addition of robots.
Overall, I wished that The Rolling Girls would stick to the moonlight stones and the source of the Bests’ powers.
I will give The Rolling Girls the grade of B.
