Their breakthrough single “The Outfield” was co-produced by the front-man and chief lyricist Martin Johnson, and Grammy-winning Aussie producer Francois Tetaz; furthermore, it features background vocals from Grammy winner Gotye. “I really wanted to create something genuine with this album and with this project,” he said. “I stepped in a room and shut down everything else in my life. I was depressed for a while, and wrote sad songs.”
On August 22, The Night Game will be performing live at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey. “I’ve been there a couple of times in the past, and New Jersey is always fun. We’re going to play a lot of songs, and we’re going to have a really good time,” he said. “We’ve had fun on this run, and we’ve been out on tour with John Mayer performing on big stages. I’ve enjoyed both: small stages and big stages. We are excited. It’s a great way to introduce what this new project is about.”
Regarding the digital transformation of the music scene, he said, “I came of age really in the MySpace generation. For me, music being accessible to fans, the faster and easier it is for it to spread. I can spend my time being resentful, but times are changing, and the music is now free. It begins with many people as quickly as possible, and that’s a good thing.”
Johnson’s advice for aspiring singer-songwriters is as follows: “Let the music speak for itself.”
For his fans, he concluded, “I did this project for me, because I wanted to create something. It made me feel really good and it resonated with me. I hope the listeners feel the same way, and I hope to see them at a show.”
In addition to The Night Game, Johnson is the lead singer of the pop-rock group Boys Like Girls. They collaborated with country-pop songstress Taylor Swift on “Two Is Better Than One.”
