Two years ago, Netflix teamed up with Marvel Studios to provide subscribers with some quality, long-form, superhero content. Beginning with Daredevil in 2015, then Jessica Jones the same year, Luke Cage in 2016 and most recently, Iron Fist, audiences were enthralled by the series’ ability to create exciting stories that still feel true to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, one thing fans quickly realized is they all occur in a different corner of Hell’s Kitchen. With several crossovers already, it was only a matter of time before the four heroes would meet. The Defenders trailer offers a glimpse of what that team-up will look like.
Nurse Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) has been the one constant in each of these series, so it’s not surprising she’s the one that helps bring them together. While she introduces Luke (Mike Colter) to Danny Rand (Finn Jones), Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) intervenes on Jessica’s (Krysten Ritter) behalf during an interrogation. Though Claire seems to have initiated the team-up, it looks like Stick (Scott Glenn) will be their Nick Fury of sorts. In addition to Elektra’s (Élodie Yung) return and the Hand’s involvement, there’s a new villain in town and her name is Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver).
With no comic book history, little is known about Alexandra — except that she appears to be intelligent and ruthless, on par with criminal mastermind Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). She confronts the heroes face-to-face at least once, informing them of their weaknesses. Meanwhile, possibly sneaking up from behind the fray, Elektra takes on (and puts down) Daredevil. But it’s the scene in the hallway in which, after exchanging a couple of quips, the newly formed team takes on a small army of suits that looks worth the wait. Also, there’s less room for Danny to annoy audiences among this kickass group that doesn’t take BS. Set to Nirvana’s “Come as You Are,” these characters will do just that in August 2017.
