The Crystal Method talks Tool summer tour, new album, PJ Harvey (Includes interview)

This June, Kirkland will join Tool as special guest on a two-week North American summer tour. The tour kicks off on June 9 in Chicago. “I am doing support dates with Tool, and I will be doing my own dates in the summer. I am in the studio working in production for that,” he said. “See you soon,” Kirkland told their fans.

Kirkland will be offering an unparalleled and immersive interpretation of The Crystal Method’s “Trip Like I Do,” “Busy Child,” and “Name of the Game,” among others.

He is drawn to electronic music due to its ability to “go anywhere you want in a track.” “It is very natural to me,” he said. “I love the instrumentation of working with synthesizers and sampling real drums. There are no dead ends, and you can always find something new with the production.”

The platinum-certified musician contributed to the score for the upcoming Netflix documentary Hired Gun, which premieres this summer. Kirkland crafted a powerful sonic backdrop to propel and punctuate the narrative. “It is a really great documentary about the trials and tribulations of hired musicians that go out on the road with bands and go in the studio with artists to help them make albums,” he said.

He shared that his new studio album is coming together. “It is a little bit different from the last record. The tracks will be a little bit more open and less dark. It is in the early stages, but it is coming together,” Kirkland said. “I am working with a couple of different people. We are going back and forth with demos, so it is really in the earliest of stages. I wanted to build simple structures and movements.”

Kirkland listed Grammy-nominated British songstress PJ Harvey as his dream female collaboration choice. “I still have a thing for PJ Harvey. I still listen to her records from the 90’s. I just love her voice and the way that she writes,” he said.
