‘Tetris’ movie in the works

The announcement came Tuesday exclusively via the Wall Street Journal. At some point in the future, Threshold Entertainment — in collaboration with the Tetris Company — will release a live-action adaptation of the classic game. So far, there are no attached actors or directors, but Threshold apparently has a story in mind.

Threshold CEO Larry Kasanoff was quick to dispel some notions of what the movie could turn into. “It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie,” he told WSJ. “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”

Threshold has in the past collaborated on a number of animated shorts and films, largely with Lego, on titles like Bionicle: The Legend Reborn and Lego: Atlantis.

Kasanoff, meanwhile, is perhaps best known for his film adaptations of the Mortal Kombat franchise, releasing films in 1995 and 1997, for a combined gross of $105 million.

Threshold is looking to capitalize on the increasing presence of brands in big-screen entertainment. The Lego Movie is perhaps the most successful instance of this — not to mention 2012’s Battleship, based on the classic strategy game.

They’re not the only games making the transition to film — a Monopoly movie is in the works, with Ridley Scott attached as the producer, and there will also be an adaptation of Hungry, Hungry Hippos.
