The Tuesday night previews for the Wednesday wide openings proved worthy for both films. It turns out it was close with the male strippers taking the lead with $2.4 million. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the next chapter in the “Terminator” saga took in $2.3 million.
The PG-13 rated “Terminator: Genisys” is a Paramount film while Warner Brothers releases “Magic Mike XXL.” Oh wait, “Terminator: Genisys” is actually considered a reboot to the series. Channing Tatum and company take another round and bump and grinds over the long holiday.
The numbers will be better than last year when nothing major was released over the holiday, which was odd. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” was in its second weekend, however. Also, having the actual holiday on a weekend day (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), does bite into the figures.
No one really wants to spend time indoors when the celebration are outside and skyward. There are simply too many distractions, but matinees could benefit from that since fireworks are at night, around 9:30 p.m.
Weekend
1. “Terminator: Genisys” – 3,750 theaters
2. “Magic Mike XXL” – 3,550 theaters
The overall box office numbers may have four films in the same range over the five-day holiday, starting today (July 1). It also depends on how the newcomers take shape. It could easily be another weekend for two box office hits in “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out” to finish on top again.
The numbers will not be huge over the five-days and should end up in the $50 million range. Again, that is over the five days, so it is looking like Saturday will tank at the box office, which is the actual holiday.
“Terminator: Genisys” has already opened overseas.
