Sydney Quiseng, the lead singer of the pop group Echosmith, chatted about her new music, which includes her single “That’s My Baby! (On Main Street)” and forthcoming EP.
Sydney just released her new solo single “That’s My Baby! (On Main Street)” on Friday, January 30, and revealed that her upcoming EP “That’s My Baby!” will be out on February 20th.
This EP chronicles her unfiltered experiences with love, loss, and personal growth as she prepares to step into the next chapter of her story as a solo recording artist in Nashville, Tennessee.
How did “That’s My Baby! (On Main Street)” single come about?
I wrote this song in Franklin, Tennessee, very early in my pregnancy, before I told many people.
I wanted to write a song about loving someone out loud and I was inspired by both the love I have for my husband and the love I already have for my baby.
I knew instantly that I wanted to finish the song as soon as possible and put it out while I was still pregnant so that I could share the song while I had a baby bump.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
I treat songwriting like it’s my journal. I write about my life and process through the good, the bad and the in-between when I write songs.
I’m also inspired by the people in my life, so sometimes I’ll try to put myself in their shoes and write about what they’re going through.
It’s really fun to have a mix of both because songwriting is such an accurate way to get a snapshot of a time and a feeling.
How did you approach the song selection process for your new EP?
Writing “That’s My Baby! (On Main Street)” really set the tone for the entire EP and perfectly captures the excitement and gratitude that I have for this phase of my life that I’m in right now.
These six songs cover the early days of my relationship, the adventures we’ve had along the way, the excitement of starting a family and the conflicting feeling of moving on from what has been.
“Bloom” is the perfect way to end the EP because it really captures the growth I’ve experienced over the past several years and it’s my way of finally embracing change.
What’s your personal favorite song on there?
My favorite is either “Coffee Shop in Kyoto” or “That’s My Baby! (On Main Street).” They’re both so fun and capture this time in my life perfectly.
How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age?
It’s really cool to connect with people online and see how far your music can go because of it.
I love the process of writing songs and being in the studio, so it’s fun to capture some of those moments and share those online. There are definitely some parts about it that are hard.
I’m always trying to be more present in my daily life so it can be really challenging to find balance when there’s the pressure of being on my phone more than ever.
What do your plans for the future include?
I’m so excited to become a mom and continue to pursue music. It’s been such a fun journey so far and I think it’s going to be even more special to bring a baby into that.
I have every intention of continuing to write and record a lot of new music and get back on the road when it makes sense.
I hope that me being candid with becoming a mom while being an artist can inspire other people to know that they can chase more than one dream at the same time. It’s a beautiful thing to start a family and I couldn’t be more excited.
Which artists would you like to do a dream duet with someday?
Kacey Musgraves and Brandon Flowers are on the top of my list.
What is your advice for young and emerging artists?
Music is supposed to be fun, so don’t forget that. Every job has challenges, but I think if you focus on the creative side of it and what got you into it in the first place, you can’t really lose.
Getting to do what you love is such a gift, whether it’s a hobby or your source of income. So keep the fun side of it alive and collaborate with people that you love working with.
What would you like to say to your fans about your new music? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it?)
Over the years, I’ve learned that music is a safe space for all of us to just feel. I hope my fans can see themselves in my lyrics and feel less alone with whatever they’re going through.
