Streaming services dominate the 2018 Primetime Emmy awards

The majority of this year’s Primetime Emmy award winners were derived from such streaming services as Amazon Studios and Netflix, with five and seven wins respectively.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was the television series with the most wins. It swept five Emmy categories such as “Outstanding Comedy Series,” “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series” for protagonist Rachel Brosnahan, “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” for Alex Borstein, as well as “Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series” and “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.”

The hit western drama series Godless on Netflix won two Emmy awards in the acting categories. Jeff Daniels won for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie” for his portrayal of Frank Griffin, and Merritt Wever won for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie” for playing Mary Agnes McNue on the show.

Speaking of Netflix, the historical period drama, The Crown, won two categories. It won for “Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series,” and British Claire Foy took home the Emmy award for “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series” for playing Queen Elizabeth II.

While the streaming service Hulu scored 12 Emmy nominations this year, it was shut out from winning any awards. In last year’s Primetime Emmy ceremony, Hulu swept five categories thanks to its popular series The Handmaid’s Tale.
