The Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) has announced that singer-songwriter Steve Azar will receive the 2018 “Governor’s Arts Award,” an accolade which was established in 1988. It is awarded to individuals and organizations, in an effort to honor “outstanding work in visual, literary and performing arts, community development through the arts and arts patronage in Mississippi.”
His latest studio album, the critically-acclaimed Down at the Liquor Store, was recorded at Club Ebony in Indianola, where he collaborated with The Kings Men, which is comprised of musicians from bands of such iconic artists as B.B. King, Albert King and Elvis Presley.
Azar serves as the official Music and Cultural Ambassador of the State of Mississippi. He is an acclaimed songwriter, recording artist, producer, golfer and humanitarian. He describes his music as “Delta Soul,” and rightfully so.
He is the co-founder of the Mighty Mississippi Music Festival, the Delta Soul Celebrity Golf Tournament and the Steve Azar St. Cecilia Foundation; moreover, Azar is the subject of a documentary feature entitled Something In The Water.
