IGN reports that this is no small feat — the project has received more funding than any other project to date, and on any site, like Kickstarter or IndieGogo.
Chris Roberts, creator of the game, wrote a letter on the Star Citizen website calling the amount of support “unthinkable,” while also explaining why he continues to raise money for the game.
In short, as he says, Star Citizen is no normal game. From its website description, the game will be a PC title taking place in a massive universe with frequent content updates. You will be in charge of your own ship and build whatever kind of life you choose, whether that involves a life of crime or a life in the military.
The $55 million (and counting) has come from more than one source. Gamespot reports that the game raised a little over $2 million in 2012 using Kickstarter, while the rest has flowed in through the website.
The site has received its funding by selling different kinds of ships that players will be able to use in-game.
The company said it will be spending all its money on development. So far there is no word on a release date.
