Young actress Sophie Jane Frick chatted about being a part of “The Lost Bus” on Apple TV+ and working with Matthew McConaughey.
“The Lost Bus” is based on a true story – the 2018 Camp Fire that destroyed the town of Paradise, California. The Camp Fire became California’s deadliest wildfire.
Experience shooting ‘The Lost Bus’
On her experience filming “The Lost Bus,” she said, “Working on ‘The Lost Bus’ was incredible because I had the opportunity to work with (and learn from) talented, experienced actors like Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera.”
“The director, Paul Greengrass, was also phenomenal to work for and so supportive. The entire cast, crew, stunt crew, and the production staff were all amazing and I hope I get the chance to work with all of them again in the future,” she elaborated.
Working with Matthew McConaughey
On working with Matthew McConaughey, she said, “It was inspiring. He is such an amazing actor and I loved watching and learning from him on set. He made me feel important and valued and treated everyone with the utmost respect.”
Playing her character Maya Metcalf
On playing Maya Metcalf, she said, “I play Maya Metcalf, who is one of the students on the bus. For me, it was an honor to be a part of this movie.”
“I come from a family of first responders: My father is a police officer; my mother is an Air Force Veteran, and my grandmother is a nurse, so I have a deep connection and appreciation for first responders and those who help our communities during emergencies,” she explained.
Lessons learned from this role
On the lessons learned from this role, she shared, “My role in ‘The Lost Bus’ taught me about courage; it also taught me about hope and faith in humanity.”
“Even with all the bad things that happen in the world, there are good people who are always willing to help others. Working on the movie reinforced my belief in the goodness of people,” she elaborated.
The digital age
On being an actress in the digital age, Frick remarked, “Being an actress in the digital age is all I have known.”
“When I booked my first role as Carol Smith on the first season of AMC’s ‘Dark Winds,’ I filmed my audition at home and emailed it to the casting director,” she noted.
“I didn’t meet with the actors, producers, or director in person until I arrived on set for filming,” she added.
Advice for young and emerging actors
For young and aspiring actors, she said, “My advice to young actors is to stay motivated and to keep moving forward. The world of acting is full of rejection, but consider every audition an opportunity to learn and grow.”
“I am always taking acting classes and I keep learning new things. I am also part of a musical theatre company as well as a show choir, which helps fulfill my desire to perform between auditions,” she elaborated.
“Acting is like building muscles,” she admitted. “If you don’t continue practicing, you lose your skills. Acting is something you have to be passionate about, because that desire can be seen in auditions.”
“For me, being on set is the most amazing experience. I have never felt like it is a job because I enjoy it so much,” she added.
