Sofi Tukker talks Ultra, technology and success, remembers Avicii (Includes interview)

This marks their second time performing at the Ultra Rooftop event at the Sony Music Building in New York. “It feels great. It feels like it was yesterday. It doesn’t feel like two years at all,” they said.

Their set at the Ultra Rooftop included their track “Everybody Needs a Kiss,” where they collaborated with electronic music veteran Benny Benassi. “He is a really nice guy, and he is on Ultra as well. We didn’t know what to do with the song, but it worked out perfectly with Benny [Benassi],” they said.

Sofi Tukker defined the word success as “Being able to do what we love forever.” “Doing what we love with the same amount of joy that we feel today, and not losing the integrity and the spirit of what it is right now,” they said.

For Sofi Tukker, the loss of electronic star Avicii was “really heartbreaking.” “Avicii really brought popularity to electronic music, and a full wave of music that influenced our lives so much, and many other people. It was really a huge tragedy,” they said. “We were playing a show in Brooklyn, and after he passed, we played ‘Levels’ in his honor, which was heartbreaking and heart-warming all at the same time. It was a very moving moment.”

Digital transformation of electronic music

On the impact of technology on the electronic music business, Sofi Tukker said, “It’s all we ever knew. We weren’t really in it before Spotify. As consumers, it has changed for us more, but as artists, technology has been the same way the whole time. We started as complete independent artists, and in that sense, it is important to have streaming services for our music to be heard. I think they are important. Technology leads to more opportunities.”

They use technology a great deal in their lives. “Being able to have our music that we are making, in progress, on our laptop is really great. We did it while we are traveling on planes, so it is not wasted time, and that it all thanks to technology. We use tons of Voice Memos. We would run out of the shower and we would record our ideas on Voice Memos.”

They listed MK as their dream collaboration choice, who ironically enough, also performed with them at the Ultra Rooftop event in New York.

For their fans, they said, “Thank you for caring, listening and dancing. Hopefully, we will see you soon. We are coming everywhere.”
