Country duo SmithField chatted about their new EP “Love You to the Moon.”
The duo is comprised of Trey Smith and Jennifer Fiedler.
How did you approach the song selection process for the new EP?
This EP really kind of created itself. “We’ll Figure It Out” and “If It Ain’t You” were songs we had released previously, that have been used in countless weddings.
Because of that, we felt like we needed to create proper wedding versions of those two. As for “To The Moon” and “Never Gonna Get Married,” these are songs that we each wrote for our respective spouses on our wedding days.
“Love you to the Moon” is something Trey and his wife say to each other all the time, so that inspired track 1 on the EP. Jennifer’s song for her husband is “Never Gonna Get Married.”
It was written about the uncertainties and fears of committing to a marriage, that are ultimately dispelled when you find the right person.
The selection of these four songs because we had two tried and true wedding songs already, and we just added two songs that were personal reflections of each of our own love stories. Collectively and naturally became a full project “Love You to the Moon.”
What is your personal favorite song on there and why?
I think we are probably both pretty biased here. My personal favorite is probably “To The Moon” since it is the song I wrote for my wife on our wedding day.
Jenn’s favorite is a tie between “Never Gonna Get Married,” which we wrote for her husband, and “If It Ain’t You,” which was written about the greatest love she ever knew – her Grandparents.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
We are usually inspired by whatever it is that we’re going through at the time. The stories we tell are pulled from life, loss, love, relationships, and family. That can be something from just one of our perspectives, or something we’re both going through.
We wrote “We’ll Figure It Out” on a hard day that we felt like giving up, so that song was really almost a message to ourselves to encourage us to keep going.
We always try to write music that moves people, and tugs on the heartstrings, which is the reason our debut album that we released last year is called “Country With Heart.”
Were you going for a certain theme with this EP?
Definitely! We wanted this EP to be a collection of songs you can play and use on your own wedding day, that came straight from our own love stories and special days. The theme is a celebration of love, and the journey from “yes,” to “I do,” to “I will forever.”
What do your plans for the future include?
We have some exciting announcements coming that include a “Wedding Tour” that involves us possibly playing at people’s weddings, new music, show announcements, and releasing part 2 of our debut album “Country With Heart.” Can’t wait for what the rest of 2025 holds!
What does the word success mean to you?
Such an interesting question! To some, we are already successful.
Of course, you’re always inclined to hold yourself to a higher standard, so I think for us that looks like playing sold out shows in vibey and intimate theaters (and maybe arenas one day).
Also, holding some CMAs and ACMs “Duo of the Year” awards, getting the chance to take our music to the masses with big television opportunities, and just doing something we love to do, for millions of people that love watching us do it.
Oh, and opening a coffee shop one day!
What would you like to tell our readers about the new EP? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)
We just hope that many of you can connect your own love stories to this project. It is a glimpse in to our own journeys that we are so excited to see be a part of your big days! It’s our love letter to you all, for memories that will hopefully last a lifetime.
