Skylar Stecker talks new holiday song ‘This Year,’ Bruno Mars (Includes interview)

The songstress is signed to Cherrytree Records, which brought up such artists as Lady Gaga and Ellie Goulding. Her previous single “Only Want You” became her second No. 1 hit on the Billboard dance charts.

On her new holiday song, ‘This Year,” she said, “In the past, I have performed and recorded classic Christmas songs. I wanted to do something different this year which gave me the idea of ‘This Year.’ I worked around that theme to write an original holiday song that I could perform and be proud of for years to come.”

Regarding her future plans, Stecker said, “I have been writing and recording a lot of new music, and I am really excited to be finally releasing a new album next year.”

When asked what inspired her music, she said, “I find inspiration in how I feel, how someone else feels or things I hear and read. I also find inspiration for my music in all the things around me that I find interesting or that I am passionate about.”

She listed Bruno Mars as her dream male duet choice. “I finally got to see him in concert a few weeks ago and he was amazing! I love how creative he is and what a true entertainer he is on stage. He just seems like an overall awesome person,” she said.

On the digital transformation of the music business, Stecker said, “As far as I’m concerned, technology has always been a part of music. Specifically in the last three years, it has taken the industry to a whole new level. There are pluses and minuses, but I love how simple and fast it is now to connect with my fans.”

Stecker noted that as a contemporary musician, she uses technology in every aspect of her career. “I use technology to share new music, upcoming events and pretty much anything and everything I am doing music-wise,” she said.

She listed Beyonce, Alicia Keys and her dream male duet choice, Bruno Mars, as her greatest musical influences.

On her latest single “Blame,” she said, “I grew up listening to all sorts of different genres of music in my house, so it was important to me to incorporate all those vibes in my new music. ‘Blame’ is a sneak peek into what I’m calling my ‘new era’ of music. It has an urban beat, with an R&B flair but still keeps a pop melody. I love that it starts off fun and flirty and then takes a turn and leaves the listener feeling confident.”
