Acclaimed actress Sharon Case chatted about her 2023 Daytime Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actress” for “The Young and The Restless.”
For well over three decades, “The Young and The Restless” has been the No. 1 daytime drama. “I am so glad to be a part of it,” she said.
On being a part of “The Young and The Restless” family for 28 years, she said, “It feels incredible to be on the show this long. I feel very lucky and very blessed, that’s for sure. I’ve really loved every minute of it. I feel that the time went by very quickly, and that’s my other family now, and it’s a big part of my life.”
Sharon Case: 2023 ‘Lead Actress’ nominee
This marks Case’s first career Daytime Emmy nomination in the competitive “Lead Actress” category for her role as Sharon Newman, a role that she has been playing for over 28 years. “The Emmy nomination feels amazing,” she exclaimed. “I am just so happy, I love it.”
Prior to this year, Case was nominated four times for a Daytime Emmy. She took home the “Outstanding Supporting Actress” Emmy Award back in 1999.
Scenes in her Emmy reel
“In my Emmy reel, I submitted the scenes where Sharon finds out that Rey dies, and Nick tells her that it happened, and Sharon falls apart,” Case said. “Then, there are some aftermath scenes, where Sharon is talking to different people in her life about her grief, anger, and all the different things she is going through after Rey’s death.”
“There were some sad scenes in there, but I thought it came together as a nice reel, and I am honored that I got recognized as a nominee this year. It’s my first time being nominated for ‘Lead Actress,’ so that means a lot,” she acknowledged.
Favorite storylines on Y&R
On her favorite storylines over the years, she remarked, “I hate to say this but I loved burning down the ranch. I loved the ranch set and I am so sad that it’s gone. At the time, I fully believed that they would rebuild it of course, and that hasn’t happened yet.”
“I also liked some of the stunt work that I did, such as Sharon and Nick jumping out of a plane, and many other stunts. These stunts were so fun and they added elements to my acting abilities and my skills. Looking back, I’ve done a lot of stunts,” she reflected.
Case also shared that the death of her onscreen daughter Cassie Newman (played by Camryn Grimes) was the “most poignant storyline” that she has ever done. “That had a huge impact on the rest of Sharon and Nick’s life,” she said.
Dialogue-heavy
When asked how she handles being dialogue-heavy on the show, Case said, “It’s hard. Some years, I would have many pages of script and dialogue for the whole year. Then, you get used to it, and it’s not a problem, it becomes effortless.”
“If you go through periods of time when you don’t have that much dialogue and you get relaxed and complacent, then it becomes hard again, and you have to train your brain again. As actors, this is what we are up against. Also, when you play and know your character for a long time, the easier the script flows,” she explained.
The digital age
On being an actress in the digital age, Case said, “I think it’s great. Now, more people can watch the show having more outlets. With streaming, it’s great because there are so many more ways to get the show out there, and if you are a viewer with Paramount+, you can easily watch your show there.”
“Streaming makes things so much easier, and it takes all the pain out of things… so you don’t have to worry about your video recorder not working,” she added.
50th anniversary for the show
This past March, “The Young and The Restless” celebrated its 50th anniversary on the air. “That was so much fun,” she said. “This 50th anniversary has been a lot of great energy. We had a really beautiful anniversary party in downtown Los Angeles.”
Case had positive words about working with co-star Conner Floyd, who plays Chance Chancellor. “This year, is when Conner Floyd and I really started working together. Conner is just the sweetest and kindest man; Conner is so humble and genuine. As an actor and as a human being, he is very generous. I look forward to working with him, and we both have a lot of fun,” she said.
She noted that she would love to do more scenes with veteran actor Trevor St. John, who portrays Tucker on the show. “I haven’t had a chance to work with him enough,” she said. “Tucker is such an interesting character, and Trevor does a good job playing him. I’m sure we will get our opportunity to work more at some point in time.”
Stage of her life
On the title of the current chapter of her life, Case said, “Busy… in the best way possible.” “I am shooting a big storyline right now, so I have just been busy,” she foreshadowed. “I am taking every moment in to enjoy it.”
Advice for young and aspiring actors
For young and aspiring actors, she encouraged them to “keep at it.” “You need to constantly work on your craft, that’s what it takes to be great at anything. If you are a working actor, this can be a fun business,” she said.
“When you work on your skills and your abilities, as you grow, those things grow with you, and a part of who you are, and your experiences in life, all add to that over time. It’s a really fun journey and I would tell anyone to look forward to that,” she added.
Success
On her definition of the word success, Case explained, “Success means a lot of things. It means hard work, happiness, and being satisfied with your work, and looking back and not having any regrets on your decisions. More than anything, success means moving forward.”
Thanks the fans
For the loyal fans of “The Young and The Restless,” Case stated, “I couldn’t have done all this without the fans, it wouldn’t be the same, that’s for sure. I cannot say ‘thank you’ enough to them, most of our viewers are multi-generational, and that’s really lovely.”
