Sean Tyas talks ‘Degeneration’ album, electronic music, future (Includes interview)

On the song selection process for Degeneration, Tyas said, “I think it wasn’t really about selecting of tracks already. Pretty much every track on Degeneration was made to be on the album regardless as to if it was released as part of an EP or single already. The body of work and the range of everything was the most important thing. To cover loads of different sonic territories.”

Tyas listed “Vagabond,” “Hive [A],” and “Kontrast” as his personal favorite songs on the new album.

He is drawn to electronic dance music due to his love for “the sounds.” “The sonic texture that is unreachable by real instruments to be able to build this environment of sound to the listener. That is one very unique power to have,” he said.

Tyas is actually from Long Island, and he went to college in New York City, so he does miss the city. “I think what I miss the most is just being able to eat whatever I want basically whenever I want. The amount and variety of options is just unreal, and you barely even realize that until you don’t have it anymore. I live in small almost-kinda-village halfway up into the Swiss alps now, and there is not even so much as a McDonalds, Burger King, or even Starbucks, in my city,” he elaborated.

Within the next five years, Tyas sees electronic dance music bigger than it already is. “Look at how things are going. Pop stars are stealing electronic artists to produce for them now. I think in the next five years however, hopefully anyway, there are more genres that are being presented to the casual listener (radio listener who doesn’t usually bring their own choice of music into their car/office/whatever). For example on USA satellite radio, of the two dance stations, 99 percent of the music is the same annoying big room crap, that ran out of new ideas years ago. Diversifying this amazing medium would do wonders for all dance music,” he explained.

His plans for the future include a great deal of touring to support Degeneration, as well as promoting the CD as much as her can. “The feedback thus far has blown me away with the positivity and support, so now my goal is to get it into the hands of people who may not have ever listened to my stuff before. Studio-wise, just like last year, I am going manic, and once again have so many plans I may not even be able to get to it all this year, but expect a ton of new stuff,” he said.

Each day, Tyas is motivated by his three daughters. “They are six, four, and one years old, so it’s really cute, and they really motivate me to do better, because let’s be honest, in the end it’s totally all for them,” he said.
