Grammy winner Scott Hoying of Pentatonix chatted about the book “The Untold Story of Scott Hoying, Pentatonix Star,” which was written by his mother Connie Hoying.

Scott penned the foreword for his mom’s book.

What did this book teach you about yourselves?

Honestly, it reminded me how much life can change when you stop doubting yourself and start trusting the journey a little more.

Looking back at everything — the highs, the lows, the totally chaotic moments — it made me realize how resilient we are, and how much love really carried us through it all.

On a more personal note, it also made me realize just how much of my own hyper-focus and obsession with creating comes from my mom.

Watching how excited and passionate she got while writing this — calling me with new ideas every day, pouring her heart into every detail — I was like, “Oh, that’s where I get it from.” It’s such a special thing to recognize that connection.

Has writing this book brought the two of you closer in any way?

Absolutely. I mean, we’ve always been so incredibly close, but reliving all these memories together — especially the ones that were funny or emotional or even a little tough — it brought another layer of nostalgia that only amplified the gratitude I have for my mom.

It’s one thing to live it all together, but it’s another thing to really sit down, relive it, and realize how much we’ve been through, and how special it is that she’s been such a rock for me for my entire life.

Can you tell us about the exclusive song, “Pray,” that accompanies the book?

“Pray” is a fun, gospel-inspired song about loving your truest self despite being told to change.

It’s a satire on how ridiculous it is to be asked to “pray the gay away,” “snap your fingers and make a change,” or “just choose” — impossible, hurtful, and honestly a strange thing to ask of anyone, especially a kid.

I wanted the song to feel defiant, freeing, and tongue-in-cheek— all about celebrating who you are and not letting anyone make you feel small.

It felt like the perfect companion to the spirit of the book, especially once you read the chapter about my coming out.
